Where reading is the purpose.
WHAT MATTERS MOST
Readability: size, contrast, line length, spacing
Heading structure, since articles are navigated by it Descriptive links Alt text on images
LONG ARTICLES
A contents list at the top, linking to sections, helps everyone and particularly helps screen reader users.
PULL QUOTES AND CALLOUTS
Frequently styled with poor contrast. Check them.
If a quotation duplicates text already in the article, mark it so it is not read twice.
EMBEDDED CONTENT
Videos, social posts and interactive elements embedded from elsewhere carry their own accessibility.
You cannot fix a third party's widget. You can provide the information another way.
ADVERTISING
Frequently the least accessible part of a page, and the slowest.
If you carry advertising, be aware it affects the experience regardless of your own work.
COMMENTS
The form needs labels and error handling like any other.
INFINITE SCROLL
Difficult for keyboard users, who may never reach the footer.
Provide pagination as an alternative.
TESTING
Read an article with a screen reader. Navigate by headings.
