Making it understandable.
THE ANALOGY THAT WORKS
A domain is like a business name in a directory. DNS is the directory entry saying where to find you.
Moving premises means updating the entry, and it takes a while for every copy of the directory to be updated.
WHAT CLIENTS NEED TO UNDERSTAND
Their domain and their hosting are separate things Changing where a site is hosted requires updating the directory entry It takes time for everyone to see the change Their email depends on the same system
WHAT THEY DO NOT NEED
Record types, TTLs, or the difference between authoritative and recursive.
WHAT TO TELL THEM BEFORE A MIGRATION
There will be a period where some people see the old site and some the new Email may be briefly affected It will settle within a stated period
Setting that expectation prevents the anxious call.
WHAT TO TELL THEM ABOUT OWNERSHIP
Their domain is registered in their name, and they control it.
That reassures, and it is correct practice.
WHAT NOT TO DO
Explain at length. A client who asks how DNS works usually wants to know whether their site will be down.
