If you have access to the DNS provider the nameservers point at, you can change records.
That covers most operational needs short of a nameserver change or a renewal.
RECOVERING ACCESS
Most registrars have a recovery process requiring proof of identity or of entitlement.
Expect it to take time, deliberately.
IF THE DOMAIN IS IN SOMEONE ELSE'S NAME
The registrant is who the registrar deals with. Demonstrating entitlement as the business requires evidence.
Start early rather than when renewal approaches.
THE RENEWAL RISK
A domain you cannot renew will expire. That is the urgent part.

Domains registered in the business's name, with a contact address on a different domain, and more than one person with access.
