Address to name.

WHAT IT IS

The reverse of an A record: given an address, what name does it claim?

WHY IT MATTERS

Mail servers check it. A sending server whose reverse lookup does not match its identity is treated as suspicious.

WHO CONTROLS IT

The owner of the address range, which is us, not you.

You cannot set reverse DNS in cPanel. It is not part of your zone.

ON SHARED HOSTING

The server's reverse DNS is set to the server hostname. That is correct and you do not need to change it.

Your mail sends as the server, and the authentication that matters is SPF and DKIM.

ON A VPS WITH A DEDICATED ADDRESS

Reverse DNS matters more, particularly if you send mail directly.

We can set it for you. Open a ticket with the address and the hostname you want.

WHAT TO SET IT TO

A hostname that also resolves forward to the same address. A mismatch is worse than a generic entry.

WHEN TO CARE

If you are diagnosing mail delivery from a dedicated address.

Otherwise, this is not something you need to manage.
