Checking Which Nameservers a Domain Uses Print

  • dnsnameservers, nameservers, domain, dns, troubleshooting, cpanel, cloudflare, guide

Confirming the current state.

THE METHOD

A WHOIS lookup on the domain shows the nameservers registered for it.

Or a DNS lookup for the NS records of the domain.

WHY BOTH

WHOIS shows what the registry holds, which is what actually directs queries.

The NS records in the zone should match. When they disagree, something is misconfigured.

WHEN TO CHECK

Before troubleshooting any DNS problem. Knowing where DNS is answered determines where to look.

After a nameserver change, to confirm it took effect.

When taking over a site from someone else, to find where DNS actually lives.

WHAT YOU MIGHT FIND

Nameservers belonging to a previous host A registrar's default nameservers Cloudflare A provider nobody remembered

That last case is common on inherited sites, and it explains why changes in cPanel have no effect.

WHAT TO DO WITH THE ANSWER

If the nameservers are not ours, DNS is managed there. Record that.

If you cannot access them, that is the problem to solve before anything else.
