TELLING CLIENTS WHY
Not "it is against the rules". Explain that the code has been modified by someone whose interests are not theirs, and that the cost of a compromise exceeds the licence.
Most clients stop when they understand.

CHECKING
When taking on a site, look at what is installed. Premium plugins with no licence key are the signal.

Tell the client, remove it, and replace it properly.
