Adding domains to your offering.
WHY OFFER IT
Clients need domains. If you do not supply them, someone else holds part of the relationship.
It also lets you manage renewals, which prevents the lapsed-domain disaster.
THE MARGIN
Small. Domains are close to a commodity and the markup is modest.
Do not expect this to be a revenue line. It is a service that keeps the relationship whole.
HOW TO OFFER IT
Through us, reselling registration, or by registering on the client's behalf at cost plus a handling fee.
Either is legitimate. State which you do.
THE OWNERSHIP RULE
Register in the client's name, with their details as registrant. Never your own.
Managing a domain is different from owning it, and clients must be told which arrangement applies.
RENEWALS
Track every client's renewal date. Set auto-renewal where possible.
A lapsed client domain takes down their site and email, and you will be blamed regardless of the agreement.
WHAT TO CHARGE
Cost plus a modest handling fee, or bundle it into a maintenance plan.
WHAT TO AVOID
Holding domains as leverage. It destroys your reputation permanently in a small market.
