Connecting without exposing the server.

WHAT IT DOES

A connection established from your server outward to Cloudflare, so traffic reaches it without the server accepting inbound connections.

WHY IT IS USED

Exposing a service on a machine with no public address Removing the need for open inbound ports Guaranteeing traffic arrives only through Cloudflare

ON SHARED HOSTING

Not applicable. It requires running software on the server, which shared hosting does not permit.

ON A VPS

Relevant and genuinely useful, particularly for admin interfaces and internal tools you do not want publicly reachable.

WHAT IT REPLACES

Opening a port and restricting by address, which is workable and less robust.

WHETHER YOU NEED IT

For a standard website, no. It solves a problem you do not have.

For a self-hosted tool you want reachable only by your team, it is a good answer.

THE ALTERNATIVE FOR MOST PEOPLE

cPanel Directory Privacy, or a Cloudflare firewall rule restricting a path by address.

Simpler, and sufficient for a business website.
