WHAT IT MEANS
The server is busier than usual. Brief spikes are normal; sustained high load is not.
IF YOU ARE ON SHARED HOSTING
This is ours to manage. Check Client Area > Network Issues for a posted incident.
What you can control is your own account's consumption, in cPanel > Resource Usage.
IF YOU ARE ON A VPS
The load average shows processes waiting to run. Compare it against your core count: a load of 4 on four cores is fully busy but not necessarily overloaded.
Use top to identify which processes consume CPU.
COMMON CAUSES ON A VPS
A database query consuming CPU No caching, so every request runs the full application A backup or cron job at a busy time Bot traffic Insufficient memory, causing swap use, which appears as I/O load
CHECKING MEMORY
If the system is swapping, that is the problem. Add memory or reduce consumption.
WHAT TO DO
Identify the process, then address why it is consuming resources.
Raising capacity without finding the cause simply moves the ceiling.
