Cannot connect to FTP server Print

  • ftp, firewall, cpanel, password, domain, ssl, support, guide
  • 0

File transfer refused or timed out.

CHECK THE SETTINGS

  • Host: your domain or the server hostname
  • Username: your cPanel username, or the full FTP account name
  • Port: 21 for FTP, or 22 for SFTP where available
  • Encryption: require explicit FTP over TLS, never plain FTP

CHECK THE PASSWORD

Reset it in cPanel > FTP Accounts and enter it manually.

CHECK FOR A FIREWALL BLOCK

Repeated failed FTP logins block your address.

Test from mobile data. If it works there, open a ticket with your address from whatismyip.com.

PASSIVE MODE

Most networks require passive mode. In FileZilla, Settings > Connection > FTP > Passive.

Active mode fails behind most routers and firewalls.

CERTIFICATE WARNING

Expected when connecting by server hostname. Verify it matches the expected server before accepting.

IF IT CONNECTS AND THEN HANGS

Usually a passive mode or firewall issue. Try SFTP instead if available.

NEVER USE PLAIN FTP

It sends your password unencrypted.
