The check almost nobody performs.
WHY IT MATTERS
A backup system configured and silently failing is worse than no backup, because you believe you are protected.
This is extremely common, and people discover it at the worst possible moment.
WHAT TO CHECK
Do recent files exist in the remote storage Are the dates current Are the sizes plausible, or suspiciously small Does the file count match what you expect
A DATABASE BACKUP OF a few kilobytes where you expect megabytes has failed.
COMMON CAUSES OF SILENT FAILURE
Cron not configured, so the schedule never runs Remote storage authorisation expired Disk full, so the archive cannot be created The plugin updated and lost its settings Retention removing everything because of a misconfiguration
HOW OFTEN TO CHECK
Monthly. It takes two minutes: open the storage folder and look at the dates and sizes.
NOTIFICATIONS
Configure failure notifications to an address you actually read. Then check anyway, because a system that has stopped entirely may not notify you either.
