Sending Backups to Cloud Storage Print

  • backupsdisasterrecovery, backups, backup, hacked, domainrenewal, database, security, twofactor, password, plugins

Getting copies off the server automatically.

THE OPTIONS

Google Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive, or object storage services.

Most backup plugins support several directly. Scripts can use command-line tools for the same.

SETTING IT UP

Connect the storage in your backup tool, authorise access, and choose a destination folder.

Run a backup manually and confirm the file appears.

WHAT TO CHECK

That files are actually arriving, with plausible sizes and recent dates That retention is removing old files, or storage fills That you can still access the storage account

STORAGE ACCOUNT SECURITY

The backups contain everything: database credentials, customer data, configuration.

Use a strong unique password and two-factor authentication on the storage account. A compromised storage account is a compromised website.

ENCRYPTION

Where your tool supports it, encrypt backups before upload. Store the key somewhere other than the storage account.

THE COMMON FAILURE

An authorisation that expires, after which backups silently stop. Check the storage periodically rather than trusting the schedule.
