Migrating an Application to New Hosting Print

THE GENERAL PROCEDURE

  1. Archive the application files and download them.
  2. Export the database.
  3. On the new host, create the database and user.
  4. Upload and extract the files.
  5. Import the database.
  6. Update the configuration with the new credentials, remembering the cPanel prefix.
  7. Update the site URL if the domain changed.
  8. Set permissions and ownership.
  9. Recreate cron jobs.
  10. Test with a hosts file entry before changing DNS.

WHAT PEOPLE FORGET

FOR APPLICATIONS STORING ABSOLUTE PATHS

Joomla and several others store the site path in configuration. These must be edited for the new location, or the site fails with path errors.

CHECKING AFTERWARDS

Every page type, forms, login, email sending, scheduled tasks, and any integration.

Not just the homepage.
