Self-hosted email sending.
THE TEMPTATION
A self-hosted newsletter script appears to avoid the cost of a sending service.
THE REALITY
Shared hosting enforces hourly sending limits. A campaign to a few hundred subscribers will be interrupted partway.
There is no bounce handling, no unsubscribe management, no delivery reporting, and no reputation management.
One complaint-heavy send damages the sending reputation of every account on the server, which is why we limit it.
WHAT TO USE INSTEAD
SendGrid, Brevo, Mailgun or a marketing platform. Most have free tiers adequate for a small list.
They handle bounces, unsubscribes, deliverability and reporting, which together are most of the work.
IF YOU DO SELF-HOST
Send through an external SMTP provider rather than through hosting mail. The script manages the list; the provider handles delivery.
This is a legitimate arrangement and avoids the sending limits.
THE RULES THAT STILL APPLY
Only send to people who asked Include a working unsubscribe link and honour it Never buy a list
