Running courses online.

MOODLE

The established open source option. Capable, widely used in education, and demanding.

Requires substantial memory, many PHP extensions, a proper cron job running frequently, and grows large as course content and user data accumulate.

Check requirements against your plan before installing. A small Moodle site works on shared hosting; a busy one does not.

THE CRON REQUIREMENT

Moodle depends heavily on scheduled tasks for grading, notifications, backups and cleanup. Configure a real cron job running every minute or few minutes.

Without it, Moodle degrades in confusing ways.

ALTERNATIVES

LMS plugins for WordPress, which are simpler and sufficient for selling a handful of courses Hosted platforms, which remove the maintenance entirely

CHOOSING

If you are running a school or institution, Moodle. If you are selling a few courses alongside a business site, a WordPress plugin is considerably less work.

STORAGE

Course videos and materials consume disk rapidly. Consider hosting video on a video platform rather than on your hosting.
