Hosting plans limit both how much space you use and how many files you store. WordPress sites hit the file count limit more often than owners expect.
Checking your usage
cPanel → Disk Usage shows space by folder. The statistics panel on the right of the cPanel home page shows your inode (file count) usage.
What consumes space
- uploads — original images plus several generated sizes each
- Backup archives left on the server by backup plugins
- Cache folders from caching plugins
- Old installations in subfolders you forgot about
- debug.log left enabled for months
- Email, which shares the same quota
Reclaiming space
- Delete backup archives from the server and store them in Google Drive or Dropbox instead.
- Purge and clear caching plugin folders.
- Remove unused themes and plugins entirely, not just deactivate them.
- Use a media cleaner plugin to remove unused image sizes.
- Empty the WordPress trash and spam comments.
If you are consistently near your limit after cleaning, open a ticket — an upgrade is usually cheaper than the time spent managing the shortfall.
