Filters that generate thousands of URLs.

THE PROBLEM

A shop with filters for size, colour, brand and price generates a URL for every combination. Thousands of near-identical pages, each crawlable.

This consumes crawl budget, creates duplicate content, and dilutes ranking signals.

WHAT TO DO

Decide which filtered views are worth indexing. Usually a few valuable combinations, such as a popular brand within a category.

Block or noindex the rest.

METHODS

Canonical tags on filtered pages pointing at the unfiltered category noindex on filter combinations you do not want in the index robots.txt blocking parameter patterns, which prevents crawling entirely Parameter handling settings, where the platform offers them

WHAT TO INDEX DELIBERATELY

Filtered views matching real search demand deserve proper treatment: a unique title, a description, and indexing.

"Blue shirts" may be worth a page. "Blue shirts, size medium, under 5000, brand X" is not.

CHECKING

Look at your indexed page count. If it vastly exceeds your actual products and pages, faceted URLs are usually why.
