The hardest part of SEO, and the most misunderstood.
WHAT A LINK IS
A recommendation. Search engines treat links from reputable sites as evidence that your content is worth reading.
WHAT ACTUALLY WORKS
Producing something genuinely worth linking to Local and industry relationships Being quoted or interviewed Sponsoring or participating in things Suppliers, partners and customers listing you Original data or research nobody else has
WHAT DOES NOT WORK
Buying links, which risks a penalty Mass directory submission Comment spam Reciprocal link exchanges at scale Automated outreach at volume
THE REALISTIC POSITION
For a small business, a handful of genuine local and industry links is achievable and sufficient for local ranking.
Competing nationally requires substantially more, which is why competing nationally is expensive.
THE MOST PRACTICAL APPROACH
Be worth mentioning, then make sure people know you exist. Most links come from relationships rather than campaigns.
WHAT TO REFUSE
Anyone offering hundreds of links cheaply. It is the clearest signal of something that will harm you.
