The elements on each page that matter.

THE TITLE TAG

The most important single element. It appears as the headline in search results and tells the engine what the page covers.

Make it specific and descriptive, put the important words near the start, and keep it short enough not to be truncated.

One unique title per page. Duplicate titles across a site are a common and easily fixed problem.

THE META DESCRIPTION

Does not affect ranking directly. It frequently appears beneath the title in results, so it affects whether people click.

Write it as a short pitch for the page.

HEADINGS

One main heading stating the topic, then subheadings structuring the content. Use them for structure, not for styling.

URL

Short, readable, containing the main words. Avoid parameters and numbers where you can.

IMAGES

Descriptive filenames and alt text. Alt text serves accessibility first and search second.

INTERNAL LINKS

Link to related pages using descriptive text. It helps visitors and helps engines understand your structure.
